Dear Folks & Sisses,
Guess I have slowed up a little on my writing. I'm still okay though.
Well, I guess the troubles are over for the fellows in Europe, except for that one pocket in Chechoslovakia. [4 years later Don would learn how to spell that country, via his Czech immigrant girlfriend Blanche] If we can just get their equipment, we'll keep going over here.
I was on duty when we received the flash of Germany's surrender. We lined up a "Victory salute" of one round from every gun and artillery piece under our command in honor of our soldiers' accomplishment over there. The guns were all on Jap targets so we didn't waste any ammunition.
Now the subject of the day here seems to be the point system of demobilization. I haven't paid much attention to it, but from what i can gather, I've got 72 points. But you need over 80, so that leaves me out. I get my points as follows:
32 months in Service - 32 points
15 months over seas - 15 points
2 campaign ribbons - 10 points
2 battle stars - 10 points
1 beachhead arrow - 5 points
Total - 72 points
So, I guess I'm in for the finish!
I got some magazines that you sent me to-day. Thanks a lot! I sure was glad to get them, and they are informative reading too! Which is the kind I like.
Has Tyke graduated yet? When is it that school lets out?
I can't seem to think of anything to write now, so I'll just mail this.
Good-bye! Love,
Donald
